What is the feng shui effects in houses build primarily with strtuctural light steel system?

What is the feng shui effects in houses build primarily with structural light steel?

Recently I have saw an advertisement in the Toronto Star dated January 29, 2014 reporting a new kind of architecture where the whole house is built with light steel assembly system. It caught my attention immediately because I believe this will definitely have some adverse feng shui effects.

My main concern is because the house is constructed with light steel structure, that means it will has a very powerful metal chi in these kind of houses. As we all know, feng shui problems are caused by the imbalance state of elements inside a house. Thus, the massive amount of steel will produce very strong metal element and this will cause conflicts with the other elements in the house. One possible result that I can predict is these type of houses will definitely like suitable for people who birth element is either wood or earth!

Furthermore, the excessive amount of steel in the structure will produce tremendous amount of magnetic fields. In my many years of professional experience, very often I have faced the same problem when I was trying to measure the compass bearing inside a high rise condominium unit, as the needle of my Lo Pan will fluctuate and the measurement will change dramatically when I move one step backward or forward. The primarily reason is that the magnetic field emits from the steel reinforce concreter structure have interfered with the Lo Pan needle. Most of the time, many seasoned feng shui consultants will advised their clients that the unit is not suitable for them or to move out because the magnetic field will affects the human body especially the head.  This have been proving true from many of my clients who are always complaining that they have serious headaches or loss of concentration when living in these kinds of high rise condominium units!

Therefore, I can imagine the difficulty of getting a compass measurement in a house that is built primarily in steel and its ill effects on the occupants! Another concern I have is in the advertisement, it boost that this kind of modern design will provide beautiful living spaces with many floor to ceiling windows. Well, I guess the designer must be a feng shui hater! For all of us who follow feng shui know that the primarily goal in feng shui is to “hide the wind and contain the chi藏風聚氣 so that the positive chi can circulate throughout the house. However, with so many full height windows, that means all the chi will be escaped from the house. Another important point is doors and windows are referred as “mouth of chi” or entry point of the outside chi for the house. So, the many numbers of full height windows in these kinds of houses means the chi is entering into the house from different directions (auspicious or inauspicious), this scenario is referred as the chi is not pure in feng shui which is not auspicious, because this will cause unstable luck and fortune for the occupants!

Of course, for those people who do not believe or follow feng shui will have no concern living in these kinds of houses. However, from my many years of professional experience, I am quite certain that eventually some of the problems that I mentioned above will catch up with them. Since this is still a relative new construction system and not a lot have been build, it will be some time that we will see the results. Nonetheless, I will be definitely keeping a close eye on its development and for the time being, this is not the types of houses that I will recommend to my clients!

How to solve "sha chi" in Xuan Kong Flying Star feng shui

What is “sha” []? How can we resolve them in Xuan Kong Flying Star feng shui?

In feng shui, sha is referred to the unfavorable conditions against the house. It is definitely not identified as “poison arrows” in many books and web sites by the so-called Western feng shui “masters”!

Basically there are three types of sha in Xuan Kong Flying Star feng shui (XKFSFS):

1. The first type are those physical forms (luan tao) that we can see or touch:
For example, corners of the building, electrical towers, electrical post and Rough Mountain etc.

2. The second type is the sha chi of the 9-stars (li chi) as listed below:

- The 2 earth star [病符星] which will brings illness and epidemic.

- The 3 wood star [嗤犬星]which will brings conflicts and gossips.

- The 5 earth star [廉貞星]which will brings serious misfortune and death.

- The 7 metal star [破軍星] which will brings thefts, robbery and operations.

The sha chi of the above four stars will manifest when they are untimely stars. For example, in Period Eight (2004-2023), the 2, 3, 5, & 7 star are considered untimely stars. The effects of the sha chi is based on its interactions with the other stars, and its magnitude will be determined by whether the energy of the sha chi is strong or weak at the sector. Let us look at the following natal chart as example:

2                      3

            6
6                     8

           2
4                      1

           4
3                     2

            5
1                     4

           7
8                      6

           9
7                      7

            1
5                     9

           3
9                     5

           8

The study of the sha chi of the sitting stars:

1. The 2 earth sitting star is located at the SE sector. The earth chi is destroyed by the 3 wood star and dissipated by the 6 Period star, therefore, its energy is not strong.

2. The 3 wood sitting star is located at the East sector. The wood chi is drained by the 2 facing star and the 5 Period Star, therefore, its affect is weak.

3. The 5 sitting star is located at the North sector. The earth chi is enhanced by the 9 fire facing star, therefor, its energy is strong.

4. The 7 metal star is located at the NE sector. Since it has both the 7 metal sitting and facing located at the same sector, therefore, the metal sha chi is very powerful especially when it is not in Period Seven.

The study pf the sha chi of the facing stars:

1. The 2 earth facing star is located at the East sector. The earth chi is enhanced by the 5 Period star, therefore, its energy is very strong.

2.  The 3 wood facing star is located at the SE sector. The wood energy is destroy by the 6 metal star, therefore, its energy is weak.

3. The 5 earth facing star is located at the NW sector. The earth energy is both enhanced by the 9 fire sitting star and the 8 earth Period star, therefore, the energy of its sha chi is very strong.

Having a good idea of the energy level of the sha chi of the above four (4) inauspicious flying stars in the natal chart, it will make it easier for us when we are determining the proper feng shui cure.

3. The third type is the sha which is formed by the combination of the sitting and facing star:

This is basically referring to the sha chi formed by the combination of the above captioned two types of sha and it is very powerful.

This type of sha chi is coming from the directions where the main door and windows of the house because these are the places which are connected to the outside, in other words, where the air and sun light coming into the house (mouth of chi). Therefore, when there are inauspicious luan tao facing the main door or windows of the house, this will become the luan tao sha; and if the flying star combination at the main door and windows is untimely, then the combination of these two sha chi will be very powerful and it will most likely to happen. As there is a saying in the classical Chinese feng shui texts: “the effect of the luan tao will not happen without the supporting li chi, and li chi will not become effective without the corresponding luan tao” -  [巒頭無理氣不靈, 理氣無巒頭不驗].

The Principles and Methods to Resolve Sha Chi in Xuan Kong Flying Star feng shui

(A) Definitions of form sha [形煞]

Form sha [形煞] basically is referring to the inauspicious exterior luan tao which affects the feng shui of the house. However, this is referring only to those inauspicious luan tao that we can see from the main door and windows of the house. Before we apply the feng shui cure to resolve the luan tao sha chi, we have to first understand its nature and then decide on the appropriate resolving method accordingly. I will list below some important examples of form sha, and the methods to resolve them:

1. Sharp objects sha [尖煞]

This is referring to the scenario that there is sharp or pointed objects facing the main door or windows. For instance, if we look out from the main door, and saw some sharp or pointed corners of a wall, building, or some kinds of art forms that are facing directly at the main door or windows. However, if it is a tall building with triangular roof top, this is not considered as sharp object sha, because the triangular shape is facing upwards instead pointing directly at the main door or windows.

The most popular feng shui cure for sharp object sha [尖煞] is to hang a ba gua mirror and a small stone tablet engraved with these Chinese characters “泰山石敢當” at the affected area facing the sharp object sha. The logic behind this remedy is the sharp objects sha is referred as a sharp arrow in feng shui, therefore we are using the ba gua mirror and the tablet which shaped like a shield to protect the house from the sharp arrow accordingly.

2. Pistol sha [槍煞]

This type of sha is formless. In feng shui, there is a saying that every road/passage way will become a pistol “一條道路一條槍 which is referring to the scenario that there is a straight road or corridor facing directly at the main door. If it happened that the flying star combination is inauspicious, this will cause health issues and accidents to the occupants of the house. On the other hand, if the flying star combination is auspicious, it will instead bring wealth luck as per the classical Chinese feng shui scripts in Xuan Kong Flying Star feng shui: [沖起樂官無價寶].

The most common feng shui remedies for pistol sha is to place the stone tablet as mentioned above at the door to counteract the oncoming sha chi from the road for a single house. For the high rise condo unit where the entrance door is facing a long corridor, we can hang a beads curtain on the door or placing a partition inside the house to block the sha chi.

3. Sky-chopping sha [天斬煞]

This type of sha is very common in modern cities. This is referring to when looking out from the window, there is a narrow gap between two tall buildings facing directly at the unit. This sha will cause serious accidents and fatal disease.

The most effective feng shui cure is to hang 6 old Chinese coins on the window facing the sky-chopping sha.  If it is very close to the building, we can place a pair of metal Chi Lin on the window sill and installed heavy curtains on the window to counteract its effect.
4. Sickle knife sha [鐮刀煞]

This kind of sha is mostly caused by the flyover in the cities. They are classified into three (3) imaginary shape: “embrace”, “reverse bow” and “straight road”. If the flyover is directly blocking the front of the building, the occupants will suffer from “hidden” disease, ill fortune and facing a lot of pressure at work.

If the flyover is embracing the building, i.e. when standing in front of the window, the occupants can see the curved shape surface of the flyover; and in addition to the fact that this is the facing sector with auspicious flying star combination, this will bring good fortune to the occupants instead.

On the other hand, if the shape of the flyover is look like a “reverse bow”, and in addition to the fact that the flying star combination at the facing sector is inauspicious, this implies the opportunity of serious accidents, conflicts and legal disputes.

The feng shui cure to resolve the sickle knife sha is to hang 6 old Chinese coins and place a pair of metal Chi Lin on the window sill.
How to Resolve the Li Chi Sha form the 9-stars

In Xuan Kong Flying Star feng shui, li chi sha is referring to the generating and destroying cycle between the 9-stars which will affects the overall feng shui of the house. The most effective method to solve this problem is to find a medium (feng shui item) to resolve the conflicts and creates the balance between the conflicting elements. The feng shui items that we used are based on the materials, colors and numbers which represents the five elements of the 9-stars.

Below I will used some flying star combinations as examples to illustrate the principles and methods to resolve the li chi sha:

1. [1, 2] combination: 1 represents the 1 white water star, and 2 represents the 2 black earth star. In this scenario, the 1 water star is destroy by the 2 earth illness star. Since the 1 water star is associated with the middle son in the family and kidney and blood of the human body; this implies the middle son in the family will most likely suffered from blood or kidney disease.

The most effective cure is to apply metal element to dissipate the 2 black earth star, forming a generating cycle of earth bears metal, metal carries water. If either the 6 metal star or the 7 metal star is also locate at the same sector, this will also help to dissolve the earth chi of the 2 black earth star. In this case, we can use 6 old Chinese coins as feng shui cure, because the coins are made of copper, the 6 number represents the 6 metal star and the round shape is also represents metal element.

2. [1, 5] combination: this combination indicates the 1 water star is destroyed by the 5 earth star which is associated with poison. If this combination did not get any other stars in the sector to resolve the conflict, most likely the male occupants of the house will suffer from blood or kidney disease. Furthermore, if earth element is not favorable to the ming kua of the occupant, this will cause cancer disease, serious accident causing death and sentence to jail.

The method to resolve this conflicts is to use metal element objects like the 6 old Chinese coins to dissipate the earth chi of the 5 earth star, and avoid earth element objects (in total of 5 numbers) and colors at the sector with this combination.

3. [1, 8] combination: this combination indicates the 8 earth star destroy the 1 water star. This implies ear and kidney problems. We can resolve this conflict by placing a round shaped copper clock at the sector where the [1, 8] combination is located.

4. [1, 9] combination: this indicates the 1 water star destroys the 9 fire star. This can resolve by adding items which represent the 4 wood star, because in the Hetu Numbers, the combination of 4 and 9 conforms to metal, and generates an auspicious cycle of metal carries water and water feeds wood. Since the [1, 4] combination represents scholar luck, we can apply 4 bamboo stems as feng shui cure.

5. [2, 3] combination: this combination is known as “bull fighting sha” in XKFSFS in which the 2 earth star is destroyed by the 3 wood star. The proper feng shui cure is to apply fire element to dissipate the wood chi of the 3 wood star. For example, red carpet or red light. Nonetheless, the fire element will also enhance the 2 earth star which will cause health problems. Therefore, it is necessary to add a round shape fish tank with 6 black fish to counteract the 2 earth star, the reason is round shape represents metal element, the number 6 represents the 6 metal star and dark color represents the 2 earth star.  This will creates a generating cycle of earth bears metal and metal carries water.

6. [2, 4] combination: the 2 earth star represents female household, stomach, skin and digestion system of the human body. The 4 wood star represents the eldest daughter. This combination denotes wood parts earth, which will cause stomach disease. The proper feng shui cure is to use a red color carpet to dissipate the wood chi so it will not destroy the earth chi. One thing we have to be careful is if earth element is not favorable to someone birth element under the Four Pillars Destiny or BaZi system, this method of enhancing the earth element is not auspicious to this person.

7. [2, 5] combination: this is the most “deadly” flying star combination in Xuan Kong Flying Star feng shui. This combination will cause serious misfortune, illness and even death. The proper method to resolve this problem is to use metal element objects like the 6 old Chinese coins, copper clock or copper painting to dissolve the powerful earth chi of the 2 and 5 earth star.

8. [3, 8] combination: this combination indicates wood destroys earth. This combination is good for the wellbeing of the small children in the family and conflicts between brothers. We can apply fire element objects or colors to dissipate the wood chi, for examples, red carpet, curtains, lights etc.

9. [3, 6] combination: this combination indicates the scenario of metal chops wood. This will cause accidents to the eldest son in the family, law suits and liver disease. We can apply water element to neutralize the conflict between wood and metal element of this combination. Examples are black color objects like 6 black fish to dissipate the metal chi of the 6 metal star.

10. [6, 7] combination: This is referred as [交劍煞] or “sword fighting sha” in XKFSFS. This indicates the cumulating of too many harmful metal chi from these two metal stars. This will cause robbery, conflicts; head and throat disease. The only effective cure is to apply water element to dissipate the metal chi. Some effective feng shui items are salt water cure or black vinegar and detergent/soap water; because vinegar is acid and detergent/soap water is alkaline which are all associated with the water element.

11. [9, 5] combination: This combination indicates fire creates earth which will enhance the sha chi of the vicious 5 earth star. Simply put, the 9 fire star will hasten the sha chi of the 5 earth star. The effective feng shui cure to resolve this problem is to use 6 old Chinese coins, copper Lo Pan, copper painting or copper clock to dissipate the earth chi of the 5 earth star.

12. [9, 6] combination: This combination denotes fire destroys metal. This will cause serious lung disease to the male household, and un-filial son in the family. The proper solution is to place yellow color or yellow color objects (earth element) to neutralize the conflict between the fire and metal element.

How to Apply Ba Gua Mirror in Feng Shui

Among all the feng shui cure, ba gua mirror is one of the most popular item that has been recommend in many feng shui books and web sites. Primarily it is used to counteract the sha chi in feng shui.

The octagon shape represents the eight directions (N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W and NW). On the surface it has engraved with the eight gua (乾, 坤, 震, 巽,坎,離, 艮,兌) of the Early Heaven Ba Gua which represents the eight natural phenomena; namely the sky, land, thunder, wind, water, fire, mountain and lake [天, 地, 雷, 風, 水, 火, 山, 澤]. Simply put, it is the combination of yin/yang, five elements and I-Ching (Book of Changes),and it is primarily used as feng shui cure item to counteract the sha chi.

Generally it comes in three designs, one is plain without any mirror, one come with the convex mirror and one come with the concave mirror. Each one has its own feng shui function:

1. Ba gua with convex mirror - this is used to reflect and dispersed the sha chi from the inauspicious luan tao facing the windows and doors of the house. For example, electrical post, T-junction road, sharp corners from other buildings and transformer tower etc., which will cause conflicts, health problems and accidents to the household.

2. Ba gua with concave mirror - this is used to attract and contain the chi field which is escaping from the house. For example, if the main door of the house is facing a staircase going downwards (referred as rolling water sha 捲簾水 in feng shui), this will cause the chi inside escaping from the house and will cause unsteady luck and money loss. Therefore, hanging this ba gua mirror on the top frame of the door will help to draw back the escaping chi.... :-)

3. Plain ba gua without any mirror - this is normally used when the entrance door is facing the yearly Tai Sui. Most of the feng shui masters will recommend using a metal ba gua in this application.

Guidelines to follow when hanging the ba gua mirror:

- Since the main purpose of ba gua mirror is to counteract the sha chi coming from the outside environment (luan tao), therefore it must only hang outside the house. If hanging the ba gua inside the house, it will cause harm than good.

- the correct location for hanging the ba gua mirror is at the upper middle part of either the window or door, with the proper orientation of the chien gua at the top and the kan gua at the bottom. It is not necessary to face directly at the sha chi.

- do not hang the ba gua mirror on the door itself, because this will obstruct the positive chi entering into the house.

- if there is no available space on top of the door to hang the ba gua mirror due to the house construction, the ba gua mirror can install on the two top corners of the door with one ba gua at each corner. This is referred as "arch chi rectification method" [拱氣化沖法] in feng shui which is very effective in counteract the sha chi. However, if there are space on top of the door to hang the ba gua mirror, it is not recommend to use this method together with the regular position of the ba gua mirror, as this will cause adverse effects.

Lastly, the ba gua mirror shall not face directly to the door and window of your neighbor, this will create conflicts and hostile relationship with your neighbors and also between the members of the household.

Well, it is the time again that I will post my annual predictions of feng shui and its remedies for the 2014 Annual Flying Stars. Before I go ahead, I wish all my readers a Healthy and Prosperous 2014, Year of the Horse!

Center Palace

In 2014, the annual number 4 star flies to the center palace. Since this star is referred as the scholar star in XKFSFS that means it will bring scholar luck and cultural frame.
The number 4 star is associated with the “sun” kua and this kua is related with the wind, which implies this year there will be many typhoons and hurricanes. Furthermore, since its element is wood; it will destroy the earth element of the number 5 earth base star at the center palace. This implies the opportunities of earth quakes.
Furthermore, [5, 4] combination also denotes skin, stomach, nervous system problems, breast cancer and infectious disease. I will advise readers to be careful when travelling in 2014 accordingly!

The appropriate feng shui cure to neutralize the conflicts between the earth and wood element is to place a red color carpet at the center of the house.

East Sector
In 2014, the annual number 2 star flies to the East sector. This star will cause conflicts, gossips and law suits. When it combine with the number 3 base star, [2, 3] combination is referred as “bull fighting sha”; this will cause law suits, conflicts in the family especially between husband and wife, mother and son.

The wood element of the number 3 star will enhance the energy of the number 2 earth star which will cause health problems, especially to the digestion system, skin, and hands and feet; and it will mostly affect the eldest son in the family. Therefore, it is important that every household must apply feng shui cure at the East sector of the house especially if the entrance door, bedroom door or the bed is located at this sector. The proper feng shui cure is to hang 8 old Chinese coins and a metal Wu Lo at the East area of the house.
Again, since the wood element will destroy the earth element in this scenario, this also implies the opportunities of earth quakes. Therefore, be careful when travelling to the Eastern countries.

South sector
In 2014, the annual number 8 star flies to the South sector. The number 8 star is the most auspicious star in Period Eight (2004 – 2023). This star will brings wealth, good fortune, promotion and marriage. If the entrance door or the bedroom is located in this sector, the household will enjoys good fortune without the need of applying any feng shui enhancement. For other rooms which are located at the South sector, you can place a container of water and add 6 old Chinese coins and 8 pieces of white jade in the water to enhance the positive chi of the number 8 star.
However, the 2014 “tai sui” is also located at the South sector. Therefore, if the entrance door is located at the South sector, you need to hang a metal ba gua on top of the door to counteract the sha chi of the “tai sui” star. Also, it is important to avoid any major construction works or digging of ground in the South sector, otherwise it will cause bad fortune and health issues.

West sector
In 2014, the annual number 6 star flies to the West sector. The number 6 star will brings money luck and promotions especially if the entrance door is located at this sector. In this case, you can place a water fountain beside the door to enhance the positive chi of the number 6 star.

On the other hand, with its combination with the number 7 base star, the combination [6, 7] is referred as “sword fighting sha” in Xuan Kong Flying Star feng shui. This implies robbery, conflicts and accidents. Furthermore, the scenario of two conflicting metal stars also implies bone, mouth and breathing problems.
The proper feng shui cure is to place a container with water to dissipate the conflicting energy of the metal element. Also, try to avoid sharp metal objects in this sector and make certain that doors and windows are secured to prevent any burglary.

North sector
In 2014, the annual number 9 star flies to the North sector. The number 9 star is referred as the future timely star in Period Eight (2004 -2 023) and when combine with the number 1 future luck star, the [9, 1] combination will brings romance, wealth, venture and baby conceiving luck. You can place a green or blue color carpet to enhance the effects.

On the other hand, [9, 1] combination also call for eye disease or loss of money. Therefore, be caution when travelling to the Northern countries as tourists.
In 2014, the “three sha” star is located at the North sector. Try to avoid major construction or digging of ground in this sector, otherwise, it will cause law suits, accidents or operations.

In addition, the 2014 “year break” star is also located at this sector. If there is any major construction works in this sector, it will cause accidents or even death!
Thus, based on the above, besides avoiding any major construction works in the North sector, I will also recommend avoiding placing items that will creates movement or sounds in this sector.

If the main entrance is located at this sector, I will recommend placing a pair or three numbers of metal Chi Lin beside the door facing outside to counteract the sha chi from the "three sha" star.

SE sector

In 2014, the annual number 3 star flies to the SE sector. This star will bring conflicts, law suits and gossips. If the entrance door or bedroom is located at this sector, besides being cautious in words and deeds, I will recommend placing a red carpet or a red light which is always on at this sector to counteract this untimely star.

The combination of the number 3 star and the number 4 base star also implies the possibilities of improper affairs especially if the bedroom is located at the SE sector. The feng shui cure for this ill effect is to place a pair of metal Chi Lin at this sector.

NE sector

In 2014, the annual number 7 star flies to the NE sector. This star will bring thieves and robbery. Therefore, if the entrance door or windows is located at this sector, security measures are required and also I will recommend placing a container with water or a black color carpet beside the door as feng shui remedies; and avoid having too much metal element objects at this sector to counteract the sha chi of the untimely 2014 number 7 metal star.

SW sector
In 2014, the annual number 1 star flies to the SW sector. This timely star will bring career, romance and wealth luck. If the entrance door is located at this sector, the household will enjoy promotions, romance and scholar achievement.

This is also the “beach blossom” sector in 2014, if the bedroom is located at this sector, placing a cup of water beside the bed will enhance its effects.
Since the number 2 star represents skin, stomach, abdominal, ears and excretion system, the conflicts between the number 1 water star and the number 2 earth star will cause the above health issues. Therefore, I will recommend placing a metal Wu Lo or a pair of metal Chi Lin to counteract the sha chi; and at the same time it will creates a auspicious generating cycle of earth bears metal and metal carries water to enhance the number 1 water star. Another thing to keep in mind is  to avoid brown or yellow color items in this sector.

NW sector
The 2014, the annual number 5 star flies to the NW sector. Under the Xuan Kong Flying Star feng shui, the number 5 earth star is the most vicious star among the 9-stars and it is very powerful in Period Eight (2004 -2023). This star will cause accidents and serious health problems in the head, mouth, and bone, heart, blood disease or even death especially if the entrance door, kitchen and bedrooms are located in this sector. Therefore, every household must apply feng shui cures in the NW sector in 2014.

The effective cure to counteract the sha chi of the number 5 star is to hang 6 old Chinese coins or a copper painting at this sector. Furthermore, it is important not to perform major construction works at this sector. For minor repair works, it must use an auspicious day and time to do it or start from other areas first.

Since the number 5 star is located at the NW sector and the NW is “chien” kua, this implies that people born in the following years with ming kua of number 6 will be affected:

For men – 1922, 1931, 1940, 1949, 1958, 1967, 1976, 1985, 1994, 2003, 2012

For women – 1919, 1928, 1937, 1946, 1955, 1964, 1973, 1982, 1991, 2000, 2009

Therefore, my advice to the above people is to avoid arguments or conflict with other people, reduce squander, working hard, mind your own business and be careful when travelling. Lastly, by wearing metal accessories will improve the luck in 2014!
